Depression is a function of boredom, which in turn is a function of abundance and wealth. It exists, but I have never been feeling down/depressed when I didn't have the time to feel like it. Going to Uganda, Africa there is no depression. There is making moves to survive and emotions, but no perma state of depression

so many more/other layers to this. imagine you're feeling your best, life & relationship are great, you're working on something you love, things are just flowing. mind is busy. then a negative, intrusive thought shows up. you didn't even know such a thing existed. your reality turns upside down. it's been 3 years.

This is one type of depression and yes if you don't have stuff to do, it will arise. However, depression is way more complex than that. It could arise if you have suffered from any type of trauma/bullying in any space (home, school, work) and don't have anyone to share. This will consume you and make you sick.

Not a doctor, but a student of depression Depression covers a much wider range of symptoms than just “sad on the couch” and varies a lot w person, their context, and their culture Just cuz it’s diff doesn’t mean it’s not real (cool oldish study below) https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4109689/

The average African doesn't believe in depression. Some years ago, ignorant me would have said it was a western problem. And yes, the default African mind is primed to think more about survival, which somehow keeps you going. But I think, depression is a function of many more things that varies per person.

"Almost one in three individuals in Uganda has depression, with the refugee population being disproportionately affected. Targeted models for depression screening and management across various populations across the country are recommended."
