Nearly 10 years ago now, at Saatchi Art, we devised a way to identify the primary color in an image with some library. I forget what it was exactly, but it was able to identify the primary color to a specific hex value. We then mapped all hex values to a color palette of 96 colors and then that 96 color palette can be broken down into less colors like categories close to the primary colors. So that when a user selects a color, it'll then return all of the artworks that have a primary color that falls within that category. And if the user wants to use a UI tool to get more granular and to select as a specific color within the 96 color palette, they could as well to refine the results.
