I feel like the whole Michelin thing is a grift, and even moreso after watching Emily in Paris. I went to a Michelin star okonomiyaki place in Osaka during Devcon in 2019, and it was okay I guess. The fact that there are zero Michelin star places in the Pacific Northwest despite us being legendary for our food is telling. In Portland especially, we generally don't play those weird status extortion games.

Generally agree with you. For context, I think these were the first LA Michelin stars in a very long time (decade+ iirc?). LA also got ignored for these awards for a variety of reasons, and I do think it’s telling that the restaurants that won stars—while very good—also could be “anywhere”. Same for worlds 50 best etc. it’s a bit homogenous. I also think, specifically for Japan, Michelin is useless (You should read the review I linked to, the reviewer also touches on this!)
