The career path posts reminds me of my most collectivist and also most nationalist take: bring back conscription a la post war Germany. Everyone, male and female should be required to do 2 years of civil or military service. All classes have skin in the game, eliminates the warrior class, war isn’t an abstraction, conscription is a deterrent for wanton reckless military action. Shared experience creates lifelong bonds and cohesion across race and sex.

Realistically the upper class would probably trend more towards the peace core and job core civilian wing of this type of conscription. But, if everyone had to do say a mixed basic training it’d do a lot for social cohesion and voters would be less likely to stomach sending their peers off to pointless wars.

I don’t think we get into half of the regime change boondoggles we’ve gotten ourselves into post Vietnam if banker and lawyer’s kids are going to the frontlines. Do I think we ever bring it back in this kind of way? No, not without major tragedy. But i think we don’t we’re near as hawkish if friends and family are in the mix, as opposed to maybe that one guy we went to middle school with.
