For a long time, melody has been getting gradually supplanted by sound design (timbre) as a focus in music. The theory is melody is finite but timbre is infinite. I think the root cause is tech accelerating creation & distribution, which makes the production of novelty more competitive. 🎶

The attitude shift on distortion in the 1960s is one of the clearest examples. It completely changes the "mood" of a melody (think Jimi Hendrix's national anthem). Film scores are another one. They used to almost all be very melodically driven, but now they're mostly abstract soundscapes.
