Update : We'll be airdropping $VIRTUAL directly to a user's farcaster wallet hence users will need to send the $VIRTUAL over to an external wallet you own before heading to https://app.virtuals.io/lock to stake.

If I send it to my external wallet and stake with that wallet, how do you know that it's me (this account) that is staking it?

This is also a good question. I assume part of staking is either creating an account that links to farcaster, or verifying the external wallet in farcaster as a “verified address”
