This feels like a stretch. MCP relies on what exists today. It doesn’t force the APIs to be anymore open than they were yesterday. Instead, it creates a more open world with LLMs. Participation will fluctuate but the examples in this post are weak. https://www.dbreunig.com/2025/06/16/drawbridges-go-up.html

If his point was that the API providers mentioned in the article are shuttering APIs because they feel threatened by MCP then I didn’t see where he mentioned it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

APIs don’t need to get stricter for the power balance to change. Once LLMs become the front door, platforms will guard what flows through. Builders should be ready for that.

Whether or not MCPs demand openness, brand strategy still shifts. If platforms see LLM routing as threat, they’ll close up. Founders should plan for fragile access.
