There’s a clothing store that started in ATL around the time I lived there: Sid Mashburn. Early on, their slogan was: “We love clothes and taking care of people.” Hard to argue with that combo. Just came across Sid’s “Rules for Work.” This kind of thing is catnip for coaches. Culture = how we do things. And this list is full of things—small, clear signals about what matters. It might not be your list. That’s fine. The point is: Be explicit about what you care about, then follow through. In my book, that’s what optimization is: Alignment between values (what we say) and behaviors (what we do). It’s a great day to be coachable. P.S. Not sure where to start? Ask someone close to you what would be on your list. Their take may or may not surprise you.
