Pan Chess - Xul Solar (mid 1940's) In 2023 I returned for the 3rd time to my favourite museum in Buenos Aires - The Museo Xul Solar. This is Solar's Pan Chess design. 'a glasperlenspiel combining language, numerology and astrology', of which the artist wrote of ‘I am world champion of a game no one knows.' Certain objects and artworks remain lodged permanently just below the surface of your consciousness, waiting to be reawoken by memory or external triggers. This is one just object for me. 100 $degen for bringing this to my attention. Feel a strong affinity for it. Recently started playing chess again and it made me think about how it works with the mind. The pieces themselves are nothing. Wood or plastic. But we have this information that contains the rules for how we play. And in my own work of abstract cut pieces of paper, constant re-arrangement of these forms is somehow the same idea. The paper itself has its own basic structure, and my role is to project what is seen.
