Annual compliance requirements. Recurring revenue baked in by law. Fragmented service by low tech, third-party certifiers. Requirements are everywhere (lucrative example is elevator inspections). I just paid $55 for someone to come certify my fire extinguisher that was already sold as certified.

I'm a Chartered Electrical Engineer. If I wanted, I'm qualified to sit on the panel that defines wiring regulations for the UK. But i f I want a few new power sockets in my house, I'm expected to pay somebody to certify that I did the job properly.

I thought California was next level. I hear it's even worse in the UK and that bureaucracy for listed buildings is an absolute nightmare.
