One of my friends was supposed to fly in for Outside Lands in 2017. The night before, she had to cancel. I didn’t know anyone else going that day, but I decided to go alone. I packed some books in my bag and headed to the festival. In the lulls while stages were set up between artists, I just read in the front. Someone asked me what I was reading. I offered them a book too. At one point there were four of us strangers in a little introverts pop up book club reading all the books I brought with me, waiting for Sleigh Bells to go on stage. When the music started, books went back into my bag and we had so much fun jumping up and down with Alexis Krauss. I’ve never seen those people again in my life. It was great. Don’t be afraid to do things alone. When you do, you’ll probably find out none of us are ever really alone - whether with strangers or a book, sometimes both.

So true! Loneliness is really just about how we perceive the moment. I remember as a child, I used to be home alone quite often, and it made me feel very sad, until I started spending that time by the window, watching people outside: elderly women chatting on benches, families carrying groceries, kids playing on the playground. Ever since then, I’ve rarely felt lonely. I can always look at people around me, or simply imagine what my loved ones might be doing right now, even if they’re far away.

It’s so important to be at peace alone before searching for new connections. Outside Lands is always a great time!
