Have you ever gone down the physiognomy rabbit hole of the founder of Samsung? In Korean corporate culture, many firms still ask for photos to be attached to resumes because of this. It’s one of the (many) drivers of high rates of plastic surgery for young people, men and women.

Oh wow. Tracks. Seems like it’s also going on in China too, and people are leveraging this for scams. https://farcaster.xyz/keccers.eth/0x7c3bc468

There is a very strong marketing relationship between Korean clinics and online influencers, where influencers can get their surgeries paid for as long as they are willing to post about it (e.g., vlog the process). Foreigners who don't speak Korean are especially vulnerable to scams in this ecosystem. Also, I can go down an entire rabbit hole on plastic surgery specifically in Korea - its origins, its standards, its role in the Hallyu wave around the world. It's a fascinating topic historically, culturally, etc. I also see many parallels of it in places like Texas (where I grew up), Brazil, LA, etc., where there are specific, regional beauty standards. This exists all over the world and is, to me, just a part of a deep-seated biological impulse to be attractive (as birds in David Attenborough films do). Not judging it, but observing it, and how social media amplifies it. The only thing that makes me particularly sad is the impact on children. This is a vicious cycle I see in Korea, where kids grow up wondering why they look so different from their parents and, when they find out why, going under the knife before they have the fully developed brain to think through an irreversible decision. I, for one, would love to hear you expand on that rabbit hole. Fascinating topic.

I would disagree that “people get to be themselves” now — I think we will do this until the Sun burns out. 🫣
