I’m in Singapore for the debut of my friend’s Dubai-based jewelry company at the international jewelry expo. It’s been incredible to witness him grow this from just a seed of an idea to small pieces in development to the full-fledged collections now. There is so much planning that goes into a seemingly simple runway show like this. Every time the jewelry goes on and off the models backstage, security is involved. The pieces are handled carefully to prevent damage. The emerald necklace the last model is wearing retails for 2.1 million USD. He will never create this exact piece again. Each design depends on the unique and naturally occurring features of rare gemstones. Luxury jewelry is not something that naturally draws my interest. But my friend has helped me appreciate the science and design process behind it, as well as the psychological reasons people buy jewelry. After spending all day in Marina Bay Sands watching runway shows, we ended with a dinner of Singaporean chili crab at JUMBO’s first halal location. I’d never tried it before. I was in flavor heaven.
