Good: bots and spam get removed from network, there's less spam overall, leads to better interactions, trustable

Bad: people care about their follow counts whether they admitted or not -- it's hard to trust your follower count if they keep going up and down randomly, but mostly down

A tangent to your point here:

As a newbie, I try to discover more accounts (via starter packs, channels) and I follow back everyone who shows signs of life. Still, it surprises me how few I’m following relative to followers. In my ideal world, follower and following ratio would be 1:1 - a true community - but I know that can’t really happen.
