I believe the UK is the most obese country in Europe (I think there are a few balkan countries just as bad - if you want to count them). But the obesity rate is still 2/3 of that in the US. Opposite end of the spectrum are France, Spain, Italy - broadly romance culture countries where the obesity rates are much lower.

I'm spending 3 months in Cali with my girlfriend and our biggest anxiety is around food and the quality/processed ingredients/high fructose corn syrup

I wonder if I could live on a food stamp budget while avoiding what you are trying to avoid. That would be good content HFCS is very easy to avoid on a tech income in Cali tho. You will be okay as long as you are good about label checking. I mean this is the state with Erewhon!

I think this is the biggest problem. Although on a tech budget, we generally enjoy living a simple life and be quite frugal. It's very easy to find good quality ingredients or even eat out in an "organic" way in Europe on a budget (at least in Austria). I believe it's still possible to find good quality produce for a decent price in the US if you go to farmers' markets, but not as accessible everyday - e.g. you can't just go to the nearest store and find these things in the same way that you can pretty much across continental Europe.

:( Fresh produce is $$$$ here If i did this experiment there would already be whole categories off limits. Berries — even if not organic — come to mind Do you eat more to the seasons in Europe? Ie do you find there’s fruit and veg you can get here that you wouldn’t be able to get year round in Austria
