built a simple design direction template and used it to present 3 refreshes

These are great man. Love your takeaways — agreed on the branding process. I don't like these contests for the reason that it perpetuates the misinterpretation of branding being purely visual, quick, and cheap. I would pitch the design as a concept and advocate for ongoing support to refine the concept, extend it to support the entire brand requirements, and deploy it within the team.
