The thing I notice when I’m in Europe is that taste exists distinct from wealth. In America, all arguments can be settled by who is wealthier and who gets more views. You cannot argue with Elon, because who are you? Poor by comparison, and therefore wrong. In Europe one’s own sensory experience and appeals to the terroir and its tradition outrank money and celebrity. Heritage trumps new money.

Pros and Cons. The feature in America is that by hook or by crook, you absolutely can jump social classes. "Tradition outranks money" sounds good but it means your fate is basically decided by your last name, and you have to work 100x harder for the same status that someone who was just part of a specific family can get for free. I knew a few people out of France and the U.K. who are some exceptional operators in business and technology, but their entire strategy centered around leaving Europe. They simply couldn't *do* anything.

That is very true — so much so that ā€œnouveau richeā€ is a quasi insult and peacocking through overt displays of wealth is considered gross and low-class I hope it stays that way
