Yeah, when you’re not in charge, life is easier because there’s less responsibility and thus less burden. In an ideal society, each individual finds their own balance of control and surrender without being taken advantage of.

I grew up believing in the paradigm that more knowledge, more science, and a reasoned search for truth would lead to less suffering and greater well-being for all. So when events unfold that clearly increase suffering and diminish well-being, I can only interpret them as the result of someone, somewhere, knowingly choosing that outcome. It’s deeply disheartening to see the dream of a brighter future—something I held onto since childhood—treated with such disregard.

GM When your loved one carries a heavy burden in life, it may sometimes negatively impact their decision-making. How do you help them to make better decisions without overstepping the boundaries of your relationship and without hurting their self-respect? How do you avoid taking on a parental role?

I just happened to read about ICD-11 codes for mental health diagnoses the other day. The way they can convey a person’s woes in one sentence is terrifying, but also strangely comforting.

Unlike with icebergs, there is no tech for measuring the unconscious... but would love it if psychology from Asimov's Second Foundation existed.

A good point, although things do change over the years. That’s where hard work and commitment matter, too.

Isn’t it such a relief when you can tell your supported loved one that sometimes life is too much for you too?

Years ago, my boyfriend said to me “I’m gonna quit therapy, it’s not helping me.” Today he said to me “I’m too fucked up for therapy.” Why do I still keep supporting him? Stupid love, I guess. 👨🏻‍❤️‍👨🏻

Want to help a grieving person? Spend time with them. And if you can, allow them to express their grief in any way they need to - through words, tears, singing, touch, dance… And when you’re done, take care of yourself. And then repeat. For a long time. Find out how grief really works - it may not be what we imagined.

If your loved one seems to contribute less to your relationship and your life together, ask yourself how much they need to contribute to themselves just to be able to get through their day.

Ever notice how you become more conscious of your interactions with others after spending years with a loved one you support? The delicate balance between being firm and kind might shift towards kindness, sometimes at your expense. You deserve to prioritise your wishes and needs. Work on being assertive.

Never underestimate the power of your loved one’s relationships with their parents or siblings. If your relationship interests collide with them, you need to tread with caution and respect, even if those relationships are harmful for both of you and your own relationship.
