fwiw the point here is that in order to get the benefit your have to itemize your tax deductions and in recent years only 10% of Americans do so and they tend to be the wealthiest Americans

Tax deductible vs tax credit Would presumably be the difference. I think it’s a dumb idea. Though I also think the mortgage interest deduction is dumb. Need to be thinking about how to grow revenue and address spending… not cut taxes which don’t facilitate growth.
