fwiw the point here is that in order to get the benefit your have to itemize your tax deductions and in recent years only 10% of Americans do so and they tend to be the wealthiest Americans

Agreed. We need our politicians to start taking the national debt more seriously. It’s only going to get worse running a constant deficit.

Though I also think the mortgage interest deduction is dumb.

Need to be thinking about how to grow revenue and address spending… not cut taxes which don’t facilitate growth.
