i need to acquire a solid consumer (maybe consumer plus™) grade 3d printer

any recommendations? (brands and/or specific models)

is PLA still the material to go with?

i don't need a large build volume. parts don't need to handle high stress. i'll be doing mostly R&D/prototyping and low-volume fab. my prior experience was intensive but about 10 years ago (mostly Makerbots using PLA)

My friend just bought this one and loves it. He bought the kit and self-assembly took like 15 hours so pre-assembled might be worth the extra $$

I know people with Bambu Labs X1 and 
Bambu Labs P1. They both are very happy with them. 

Bambu is more of the Apple version that has great UX and just works but locks you into the platform more than other options

helpful! i'm formally (and formerly?) a mechanical engineer + machinist, so it sounds fun to me from the outset (famous last words? 😅 )

that was his rationale too. he’s glad he went that route but he’s also got a super mechanical mind and enjoys that type of assembly. if you end up getting one and want to chat w/ him lmk…would be happy to make the intro 

hmm i might be willing to do the assembly just to thoroughly learn how all the mechanics are designed 🤔
