Apple and Google are trapped in their initial success, and they are most rotten where both have become dependent on monetization and regulation.

nobody tries to reinvent app stores, email, or search without leashing themselves to old people, like lawyers, and there is no growing community anymore, only stories to buy time before the bean counters wake up.

a web developer has to be desperate to leash themselves to vanilla Chrome or Safari. the only opportunity left is a corporat race that repackages the same thing, a fantasy of being the next unicorn without any real risk of reinventing from scratch.

if new users could escape the bullshit, they would, but everyone selling the bullshit is working as hard as possible to kill the spread of real competition.

if everyone is in an open-air prison of a shrinking pie without any common, dignified fixes, they will vote and buy any way to burn everything down. they'll only stay still until the dam cracks.

This is actually a great discussion with technology in general. When I first got in I was excited about solutions and innovation. Today, everyone is making toll booths. The cutting edge? We are sorry but if you can't prove revenue before it's built, we can't do it.

We ran out of visionaries, and are stuck with bean counting up and down the business stack.
