The Shwezigon Pagoda, or Shwezigon Paya (ရွှေစည်းခုံဘုရား), is a historic Buddhist stupa in Nyaung-U, Myanmar. A prototype for Burmese stupas, it features a gilded circular stupa surrounded by smaller temples and shrines. Construction began under King Anawrahta (r. 1044–1077) in 1059–1060 and was completed in 1102 during King Kyansittha’s reign. Over the centuries, it has suffered damage from earthquakes and other natural disasters but has been repeatedly restored. Recent renovations added over 30,000 copper plates, though the lowest terraces remain unchanged. #Myanmar #Burma #ShwezigonPagoda
