14 years before the Bangtan Boys, aka BTS, would debut on the global stage, a six-member boy band in South Korea called Shinhwa released their second album, Twinkling of Paradise.
It had only been a couple of years since the International Monetary Fund Crisis which put South Korea on the brink of bankruptcy. Wanting to improve its global image, the government began experimenting with a form of mind control via televised hypnosis.
As a young Korean girl, I was unwittingly one of the first subjects in these early trials, which used industrial amounts of hair bleach, choreographed mating dances, and rapping in vaguely English phrases.
I listened to Twinkling of Paradise on repeat on my Sony Walkman CD player, pausing only to relieve the itch from the black foam of my headphones. My trance remained unbroken until 2001, when an American schoolmate let me borrow an album during recess - "All Killer No Filler" by another foreign band, but this time of Canadian origin. 2 replies
