like if you had such a thing implanted, you wouldn't just do it at a random time right? 

you'd likely do it at a tactically critical point in time. what would that be?

2) The vulnerability was about to be discovered so had to be used immediately

Them being thrown off balance is not unlikely. Aside from physical damage to hundreds of their fighters the psychological effect can't be underestimated. 

1. Now afraid of all devices
2. Communication became very hard
3. Have been outed to the locals who aren't very fond of them
