I don’t maintain social media streaks but I produce festival-worthy art each day. I write music most days, and write about challenges I observe and come through, technical articles that summarize whatever I had to teach myself or someone else.

When I first saw streaks, I loved the idea, and I thought that it could help me be more consistent, but that was a joke on myself because I already was as consistent as anyone could be, just not publicly.

However, when the exercise shifted from creating to my best ability to publicly sharing the work that I created each day, my focus shifted from self-mastery in creation to immediate presentation—and it felt more compulsory than expressive—sharing to the crack of the whip of a streak countdown timer.

And those days where I was in the zone or was out in the world or among people - where I missed my window - I lost my streak, and I got that sinking feeling as if I’d lost something  actually meaningful when actually I *had* written the song and made the art that day but didn’t cast it, was extremely telling…

I say it’s the creation of the art that’s important, not casting it, that matters most BUT my romance with streaks taught me something valuable: I caught myself, leaning in for a pat on the head FROM A MINI APP! And when I missed it, I felt deflated, even though I had done the important work of creating the material. Stealthily, my motivation  had shifted from self-pleasing to streak-chasing without me noticing, until I crashed out.
