yeah, that's what makes this particular situation even harder.
Maybe we need a multi-step ritual, where the subordinate first extends their hand in some neutral position, indicating their desire to greet while waiting for the superior to signal the correct greeting.

Sounds absurdly like feudal levels of status rituals, but IDK what else to do at this point.
