you may not personally be interested in trading or markets more broadly but it is a valid (and popular) form of content nonetheless

the “trading is ruining farcaster” take also seems very popular with those who don’t have the skill, time, and/or interest in making money via trading. this is fine, of course, but doesn’t mean that the rest of the world is indifferent to magic internet money.

It's not that trading isn't relevant content, it's just WAY too high of a percentage of what is going on here. That's fine if Farcaster never wants to grow, but if we want to attract people outside of our bubble, all the trading stuff is a huge turnoff.

this same exact conversation happened awhile ago about lifestyle content (“the sisters are always top 3”, “it’s too much like instagram,” etc.). algo was clearly biased towards that content at the time, yet it didn’t magically lead to tons of new users. I think most are just frustrated with the lack of growth more broadly. there is no magic wave of the wand for merkle to suddenly make this a normie social network that will appeal to everyone on earth. gonna be tradeoffs no matter how they proceed in the idea maze.

It's not going to lead to new users, because the algorithm is not a marketing tool. But I would never invite anyone not interested in crypto here because there is not enough content here outside of meme coin gambling. I don't think there's a magic wand but if it were me I would be marketing by paying non crypto creators to post here and trying to bring their audience with them, and then creating onboarding tools to make sure their feed shows content outside of tech/crypto content.
