'Can we get press for this?' a question I hear weekly. Most teams overestimate what’s newsworthy. So here’s a quick checklist to pressure-test your story before you pitch: 1) It’s not about what you did. It’s about why it matters now. Good stories are contextual. The media wants to know: why this, why you, why now? 2) Proof points. Volume, users, partnerships, code shipped - that’s what gives a story weight. No one writes about potential alone anymore. 3) The bar is higher than you think. 'We raised money' or 'we launched X' isn't enough. You need a trend or an industry shift to tie into. 4) Exclusives still matter. If you want tier 1 coverage treat journalists like allies, not amplifiers. Bring them a story they can win with. 5) Your announcement is not your narrative. It's a chapter in a longer arc. Not here to dunk on @base or @jessepollak. We’re early. When you’re experimenting onchain, there will be fvck ups that’s part of it. But if I were running point on comms, i’d have done it differently. Base (and @coinbase more broadly) have done such a good job bringing the community into everything they do and Coinbase especially has set the bar on making complex ideas accessible; clear explainers, strong messaging, educational resources etc. This time that scaffolding was missing. No much context on what that was meant to be and because of that it landed more like a stealth token launch (?) than a fun cultural moment. Think the takeaway isn’t “don’t experiment”. I t’s: be clearer with intent. Set expectations, especially, when you know people are watching and capital might flow. We’re all learning in public. Just my two cents on what might’ve made it land cleaner 🫶
