Made my debut in Foreign Policy today. The story looks at Taiwan’s looking geothermal revolution. As the island looks for alternative energy sources to supplant the nuclear reactors the government foolishly shut down, there are few better resources than the steady renewable power you can generate from the earth’s heat. There’s a problem — 90% of the conventional geothermal supply is located on indigenous reserves, and Taiwan’s aboriginal people have a long history of seeing new energy developments as exploitative. There’s also a solution — far more geothermal power is accessible if Taiwan uses the new next-generation technologies the U.S. is pioneering. That would also offer a potential trade win with Trump. Taiwan’s first real attempt at reviving a geothermal industry is set to take place thanks to a deal with Google.
