A lot of people seem to think that millenials and gen X are going to inherit a shitload of wealth from baby boomers. But, after seeing how expensive memory care is, I have a feeling A LOT of their assets will be transferred to healthcare facilities instead.

Not just traditional health care. Nursing homes also, even for relatively healthy seniors with no memory issues. My grandma was in a small room at a very basic senior center and didn't need much help and it would have been far cheaper for her to stay in a really nice room at a Waldorf. It's all such a scam.

Assisted living at night with memory care during the day is going to cost us around $12k/month. It’s insane. I get why it’s expensive but man things can’t be good for people without means. We’re lucky. We can find a way to make this work. A lot of people can’t and Medicaid doesn’t cover anything close to this.

I think multi generational homes and care taking will come back and be more prevalent/normalized without any negative connotations because of costs.

It definitely should have never started being frowned upon. I talk about this with my mom all the time. She had 5 sons who all paid 5 rents, 5 car payments, etc. when we could have pooled our resources and had a lot more to show for it. Shes come around to the idea a lot more as she’s gotten older.

You can look at this topic from 2 perspectives. I have this lens as a daughter of first gen immigrants. 1) The Western perspective that rewards the individual, autonomy, and freedom: bank account(s), living alone normalized, moving away from nuclear family, child rearing is a different geo region bc of 1 singular job, etc. 2) Non-Western perspective (Eastern and non-Christians etc.) emphasize on the collective harmony, familial ties, and societal obligations: generational homes, saving/moving until you were married, family accounts (shared), raising kids in or near hometown/community, etc. #1 has grown parallel with rise of conservative politics, capitalism, and Christianity esp with social media. It’s why I made the original statement.
