“In times past, wealthy people were considered aspirational figures. Now, it’s more like, ‘If you’re wealthy, you did something wrong. You cannot be a billionaire without being a criminal. The system is stacked against the rest of us.’ And that has gotten louder and louder, and my clients are hearing it, and it’s disturbing to them.” https://www.thecut.com/article/rich-people-anxious.html

I don't think I buy the idea that people saw the rich as aspiration figures basically ever. The best rich people have always been the ones that don't flaunt their wealth. The worst rich people have always been the ones that do.

Did you not grow up poor? It was definitely aspirational before.

I absolutely did, and the rich were viewed with skepticism and often contempt among the people I grew up with. Being rich was aspirational, but the people who were rich were not people anyone I knew aspired to be.

Yeah I think those are two different things. My mom always told me "the rich are different." But everyone wanted to be wealthier. That being said, we didn't think of rich people as inherently evil. Now that seems to be the default among a growing political persuasion.
