I suppose it was necessary to read the whole thing. but this could have been a "you didn't think about resource curse in Africa, & impending social collapse" tweet. in fact, it effectively avoided anything to do with mundane economy or demographic shifting to handle scarcity of order or natural constraints.

what noo it was a super real take. Itβ€˜s not Curtisβ€˜s fault that yβ€˜all are delusional about techβ€˜s potential. Makes total sense to point out the most problematic part of the tech stack, the dumbass user

everyone believes their own intuition. sometimes, our intuition is sensational & bigger than life. what I read was a derision of other people, other places, & complete lack of sober appreciation for the arc of tech & civilization, as chaotic as it was, to our present capability. also, trotsky?

a crticism can be made, not this one though. I think the point about resource curse is unsettling & unstable, much like "golden ages", but this criticisn does mostly a "eww, yuck" number. it would be great to delve into the details of the transitions between order & chaos w/ tech as a catalyst. but it is inconsistent.

But e.g. some criticism is that technology is not the determining factor but culture

culture is transient, so it can determine rate of adoption, but to conflate the culture of 1910 with the ubiquitous tech of 2023 is sophomoric at best. and if one weighs indicators of life, like population growth, the technology compels acceleration, even if the culture is so counteractive to the point of world war.

but isnβ€˜t his argument that u should travel all these places in the third world now to convince yourself that 40 years of exponential technological improvement hasnβ€˜t helped then in any ways?
