What do I think of 'Love Island'? I don't.
Reality TV is a blight on society, and I blame two sources — viewers with low standards and the Writers Guild.
"But Reality TV is unscripted!"
First: bullshit. Second: the 2007–08 WGA strike didn’t just pry Pandora’s Box open — it shattered it. While writers were on the sidelines fighting for "new media" and "emerging platform" residuals, networks filled hours with cheap, reality trash that didn’t require real writers. Survivor propelled reality TV into primetime in 2000, but shows like The Apprentice, The Bachelor, and Project Runway gained network dominance by default in 2007–08.
Okay, so writers position themselves for streaming. Great. In the meantime, viewers get addicted to the 7-Eleven pizza of TV — "reality," while many of the most promising scripted series are cancelled or critically injured (Heroes, Pushing Daisies, and my personal favorite cancelled-on-a-cliffhanger, Journeyman).
Sea changes bring both good & bad. Was that strike worth it? 3 replies
