It seems there’s always an “[insert] is dead” thing going around. The current insert is [generative art].

Notice that the people who use these words are not the ones creating the thing or genuinely interested in the thing.

I remember when rock was dead and the amount of rock bands continued growing and we have more than ever in history coming out today. But many would say it’s still dead because nobody is spoon-feeding it to them at the surface of culture.

In these terms, generative art barely scratched the surface of being “alive” with Punks and Apes, even though it’s been around since the ‘50s (maybe earlier) and there are more people than ever in history creating it right now.

Hell, I’m still operating in the classical music realm and that’s been dead for 100 years.

I guess the message is: be careful who you listen to and remember that the only thing that is actually real and actually matters is the thing you are creating right here and now.
