City building should be as easy as dressing up your bagel, with many right answers and only a few restrictions. Right now, cities suffer from the opposite, with too many nonsensical restrictions that stifle adaptation with changing times. We use regulations to stop natural market decay from happening, artificially propping up neighbourhood fabric that leeches more resources than it provides. Cities suffocate under unnecessary restrictions, meant only to protect the privileged. It’s part of Jane Jacobs’ complex legacy which was not all good (which btw should not overshadow the good that she did do)

I think it highlights the issue that many see but we as a society haven’t figured out how to deal with - a kludge of rules/laws we’ve created that have become unwieldy. It’s a natural instinct: I don’t like x, let’s make a rule against x. Unfortunately it’s impossible to see the nth order effect of these rules and they are easier to create than destroy.
