When I was about 4 or 5 I really liked going to the zoo. Until one day I realized that somehow they are being held captive and I told my mom I’m not going to the zoo again because why do I want to see them in captivity this is the worst

i struggle with this! one thing that really changed my perspective was a podcast on Hunting Rights and Big Game Hunting Licenses. i don't like killing animals and thought hunting was pretty stupid, but it made me realize that hunting is a big part of conservation. much of the proceeds from hunting licenses goes to animal conservation, and in many areas, animals depend on the protections afforded by selling some hunting rights. now i kinda see zoos in a similar light - maybe caging them and keeping them captive isn't particularly kind, but zoos are often very conservation-adjacent and regularly employ people who care deeply about the animals. maybe it's good that my ticket sales support those folks and their efforts to conserve and protect!

My view has changed a lot since I was about 5 year old and this. That’s interesting about hunting and I’d imagine it’s the same about conversation efforts being tied to captivity. I don’t think there’s a single easy answer here. It’s not so black and white and I think that’s what makes it hard.
