When I was about 4 or 5 I really liked going to the zoo. Until one day I realized that somehow they are being held captive and I told my mom I’m not going to the zoo again because why do I want to see them in captivity this is the worst

Reality is a lot more complicated. Obviously - captivity and being in nature, I mean we are nature and nature us and not us are both pretty metal

It’s a controversial topic. In general I think I don’t like it but I had the chance to meet some people who works on Zoo and they’re doing a conservation job that is mostly not seen by the Zoo spectators. On the other hand I think that nature should be left alone on its own path, and if we’re nature as well, that means that nature kills nature and probably is just how the things is working right now. Btw I never liked when things are forced to the status quo.

i struggle with this! one thing that really changed my perspective was a podcast on Hunting Rights and Big Game Hunting Licenses. i don't like killing animals and thought hunting was pretty stupid, but it made me realize that hunting is a big part of conservation. much of the proceeds from hunting licenses goes to animal conservation, and in many areas, animals depend on the protections afforded by selling some hunting rights. now i kinda see zoos in a similar light - maybe caging them and keeping them captive isn't particularly kind, but zoos are often very conservation-adjacent and regularly employ people who care deeply about the animals. maybe it's good that my ticket sales support those folks and their efforts to conserve and protect!

I do not enjoy the typical zoo for this reason However wildlife sanctuaries (just a bigger and better zoo?) are more OK imo

I remember having to take a class I was subbing for on a field trip to the zoo. It was all around sad, until I came to the leapord pen. This poor creature was running at full speed, leaping, lunging as high as it could up a concrete wall. It was the lowest point, and the most obvious escape route, but it fell about a meter shy, scraping the wall with its claws on the way down. And as I watched, it did it again, and again, and again… and judging by the state of the concrete, that’s *all* it had done for years. Absolutely heartbreaking. I never want to go to a zoo again.
