most people never have to develop taste, just proximity.

thats why we see such lame sloppish mediocrity at “high levels”. you know someone, youre In the room. taste becomes optional. tastelessness becomes the norm.

Is there any "room" that has succeeded in maintaining high standards when it comes to taste?

Taste is relative, though. What makes sense to you might be out of the question someplace else.

it’s almost like being close to certain people = being chosen. serve bare minimum and still get applauded. whereas, some others have to work twice to get that same access. sigh

Proximity equates access and that's why they are allowed to wine and dance in mediocrity but the rest of us aren't afforded with such luxury. 

We need to build brick by brick.
