I told my dad about duolingo and told him to study mandarin, they rely on me mostly when we go to mandarin speaking places, so it would be useful for them when I’m not available. My dad told me just now he’s on his 24th day streak, and just subscribed to duo premium. It’s working!

here it's mostly the younger gen who knows how to speak mandarin and not hokkien older gen's didn't get much chinese mandarin education because they already know hokkien, while younger gen dont really talk hokkien anymore and learn mandarin from school

over here boomers and gen x who are mostly 2nd/3rd gen immigrants inherit mandarin and hokkien from their parents the millennials also inherit the same way, but due to emerging number of international schools using english as main language, and the warped perspective that using english means you're on a higher caste, mandarin kinda get swooped away, but hokkien is a major mother tongue in a lot of chinese homes, so that's how they still stay relevant
