Didn’t YC themselves say ideas that are just “X for Y” typically ngmi?

I think that's confusing what YC actually said. "X for Y" is a fine shorthand when explaining something, but the goal should be to become X other people use when they say "X for Y".

@shazow.eth you gave me an easy one. It’s def not an easy problem to solve.

It's the most effective way to explain what pre-PMF 3~6 month old startup is to other peers in the cohort and to YC investors. That's all it is.

When talking outside of that demographic (which is expecting this form factor), the reality is that there's no :mic-drop: moment. You keep iterating on your 1-2 sentence pitch with every single person you talk to, you go through hundreds of versions, find ones that work better with some people and others that work with other people. Until you've found PMF, you're probably not sticking with one.

I'm just explaining this from the context of having been through YC, because it can be hard to understand if someone who is not the target audience for that description.

Also don't forget that there's like 60% odds they're going to pivot to something completely different in under a year.

This is where we are probably miscommunicating or in disagreement. 

It’s the category that needs to get anchored in people’s mind first then the positioning within the category.
