The challenge with channels is there’s no consensus on what they should be.

1. Distribution vs. niche interest

2. Open but tons of mod work vs. Closed but frustrating for new users

A lot of this is a result of our iteration on the feature and not having anything work. 

A simpler version not dependent on the Farcaster app—but not emphasized by it, would most likely mean other app developers could solve for the various cases. 

And now with mini apps, you could imagine channel-specific clients as mini apps.

📣 There's an active discussion about what channels on Farcaster should become in the future.
The idea is to make them simpler, decentralized, and independent from the main app, so anyone can create and use channels via third-party clients like Zapper or Cura.

🔀 Two possible approaches are being considered:

A —Hashtag approach:
▪️ Just an open stream of posts on a topic, no moderation or rules
▪️ Each user has a unique feed based on their connections and interests
▪️ Everything is public — you post, and it’s immediately visible

B — Niche interest approach:
▪️ Posts are only visible to those who subscribe to the channel
▪️ No broad reach, but you’re speaking directly to your intended audience
▪️ Great for niche groups where focus matters more than scale
