been in Hakodate for the past weeks (loving it), thought about hopping on the ferry to Aomori for a bit and then come back to Hokkaido to explore further

The ferry ride is super nice. I spent a couple hours in Aormori 10 years ago so dont have tips unfortunately. Theres a lot more to Aomori than the city tho. I've heard going around the bay has a lot of great towns and restaurants. And the national park too. Could be a whole trip on its own.
