the planning fallacy is undefeated https://www.scribbr.com/fallacies/planning-fallacy/ especially relevant to our industry where people keep trying to achieve extremely complex long-term goals via "decentralized governance"

the way i personally deal with this is by guessing how long a project will take, and then just doubling it lol

I do the same thing that Drew does. Add double and sometimes triple to the estimated time. I think one of the more difficult parts of this equation. Is that many of us are consistently bad at being honest with what we can actually deliver. So the more people you add in that say I can do xyz in such and such timeframe the more compounded the problems of actually hitting targets are. Ran into this just recently. One of my devs a month ago said... Oh yeah we can get this done in a day or two. That day or two turned into they just finished 2 days ago 🤣 If you're a founder or someone that is running a project it's inevitable you will have many unexpected delays or curve balls thrown at you. Maybe this is why only a small percent of businesses succeed within the first 2 years.
