20 years ago, I could totally understand if new phd grads were upset about there not being jobs awaiting them But I can't help but roll my eyes a bit nowadays. We've known the social promise isn't there anymore for long before they started

China seemed a bit ahead of the curve (in its own way) with the shift from higher ed to vocational ed in 2021 and the subsequent ban on private tutoring, which apparently has since eased (couldn't find great articles on this, but it was all over chinese media at the time) https://www.reuters.com/world/china/chinas-private-tutoring-firms-emerge-shadows-after-crackdown-2024-10-28/
