distribution is more important than product

they got it off the ground because of nailing distribution in the first place

I‘m hearing this so often nowadays that I‘m becoming skeptical of it. I‘ve seen some people here launch products with amazing distribution potential and the product was total shit. Didn‘t work well either

depends on the product.
sometimes network effects make sense 

ex. A workspace messenger app’s experience like Slack gets better the more members of an org uses it

should distribution be part of the product?
