In India we have this popular proverb: 

If you kill a squirrel by accident, you must make a golden squirrel. 

And that was more symbolic, that we always became so careful whenever we saw a squirrel around. 

And now you don’t see squirrels in cities anymore... But we do have a lot of pigeons in cities, and you know most of them are getting killed by our cars, and we don’t really care about it like the old days when we cared about squirrels. 

That itself displays something deeply wrong with society on a moral ground, and there are only a few people left who are actually left with any love and compassion for these innocent beings.
