Happy Vyshyvanka Day 💙💛🌻🫂 It’s celebrated on the third Thursday of May and aims to preserve Ukrainian folk traditions of creating and wearing ethnic embroidered clothing. This year, it’s dedicated to the cultural heritage that remains under occupation. While russian invaders continue their attempts to erase our language, art, cultural artifacts, and national clothing on occupied territories, we focus on preserving our culture and identity 🙏

That pattern is so cool. My oldest friend got married in New York last summer and had a Ukrainian ceremony, with a Ukrainian officiant and a handmade Ukrainian shirt and all the traditions with the wrist tying. It was beautiful. He’s half Ukrainian via his mom — his dad was a Croatian immigrant. But I share this to say I think the war has emboldened many in the diaspora to revive and preserve the culture in defiance of Russia’s onslaught.

Oh that’s amazing!!! Thank you for sharing this! And 100% true!! It’s cultural resistance, which I think is a very important part of resistance during this war in general. Both people in the diaspora and in Ukraine are going back to traditions. Same with language, many are now speaking Ukrainian only (even though of course all of us know russian, I personally haven’t spoken any of it in the past three years and don’t ever plan to). So much incredible music is coming out in Ukrainian as well. This revival of culture and the fact that many people are becoming activists and spokespeople for it is definitely a result of the pushback to the russian invasion. Otherwise, it would have taken decades and generations to overcome all the soviet cultural suppression (and russia always had too much control to ensure it wouldn’t happen).
