Most modern electronics are dual voltage - for things that aren't, converters are pretty cheap.

Huh... not like that everywhere? Hehehe. But almost every electrical/electronic device in Brazil is bi-volt... just like cars are "flex" (they run on gasoline or alcohol, it doesn't matter...). At home, for example, it's 127v, but I also have 220v (for the shower, for example - and yes, the shower is electric). :-))

Most of the devices we use while traveling work at any voltage. This difference only really affects appliances.

I’d just get a solid power converter and call it a day.

Reasons are historical, or technological? Like grid lines across the Amazonian forests would be better at 127V for some electrical transport properties?

Aside voltage, they may have different frequencies… Japan has two systems on the same island, with 50 and 60Hz, never got it.
