The U.S. is seriously concerned about the supply of the specific rare earth "samarium," exports of which China is restricting. That's bad news for Lockheed Martin. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/06/09/business/china-rare-earth-samarium-fighter-jets.html

this has been a stated grand strategy of china since i was in school studying international affairs years and years ago; like zero surprises here. deng xiaopeng famously said "the middle east has oil, china has rare earth metals" in 1992. this has been decades long strategy etc here's a paper about it from 2014 https://www.jstor.org/stable/resrep00363?seq=1

Rare earth minerals will also be used in more planet killing weapons. Acquiring such minerals is a national security requirement. WWIII loading.

Well that's going to be a problem. I'm not entirely sure Trump's cabinet fully and|or accurately anticipated and prepared for the cascade of far reaching effects of their tarrif war before they started it. They seem to be finding out around the same time the rest of the world is.
