At my Toastmasters club last night, the evening's grammarian, having returned recently from a country where she did not speak the resident language (Germany), noted that the evening's speeches were filled with linguistic flourishes that were illustrative, but noted, also, that such illustrative language can decrease accessibility to people whose first language is not English. It was an interesting point about the tension between wanting to captivate an audience with vivid expressions while not making a speech inaccessible.
